Rick Owens Fall Winter 2021
Rick Owens Fall Winter 2021
We have now entered the apocalypse. Rick Owens' Fall 2021 collection is grungy, goth, and supernatural. Owens was heavily influenced by American politics and the chaos regarding the election when designing his line this season. Fashion, more than ever now, is a mirror of the world we live in and creators must be responsive to societal views and use their individuality to evoke sensation in their followers. Because the archetype of the designer is shifting, designers have the chance to use their clothes to start conversations and contribute to the world in a more substantial way.
Rick Owens' digital show was thought-provoking and sensational, even to a virtual audience. The models looked as if they had just walked out of the fight of their lives in post-apocalyptic attire. They made their way down the beach of Lido de Venezia, one of Italy's most famous tourist spots. Venice looked like an abandoned city, desolate of human life and eerie with misty fog looming over the sea. It did, however, make a perfect backdrop for Owens' show for the final season of 2021. Each ensemble looked as if it was curated for war. Exaggerated shoulders protruded out of necklines and asymmetrical puffer coats were reimagined in futuristic proportions. Unique cutouts in sweaters resembled a haute couture version of tattered clothing. Body Suits and trousers made entirely of sequins added a metallic accent to an otherwise, somber palette. Rick Owens designed a collection which echoed the harsh world during Covid. After a year of isolating lockdowns, mass death, and government mandates, it sometimes feels as if the world is coming to an end. Rick Owens encapsulates life after the pandemic beautifully and creates a contemplative aura around the pieces he debuted this season. They all scream strength, empowerment, and resilience. This is what I want to wear after a year of political and emotional turmoil
